AdvertisingAge: A hot new social-networking service dubbed Bubbly, which is essentially a voice-based Twitter, is quickly gaining popularity among Indians. And thanks to Bollywood celebs being early adopters, Bubbly is growing virally and with virtually zero marketing spend.

Bubbly is the brainchild of 5-year-old mobile and social app firm Bubble Motion, which is based in Silicon Valley and Singapore. Its first product was BubbleTalk, a person-to-person voice-messaging service that, instead of SMS, sends mobile audio messages and has about 100 million users now.

Nesci explains that he designs his minimalist furniture to encapsulate mid-century aesthetics, and the matte white finish helps it to blend into its surroundings while adding a tasteful understatement. Drawing on everyday forms (a curb, a streetlight) the 31-year-old designer crafts his work using concrete and metal—industrial materials are as banal as his sources of inspiration.

So how much is too much, especially behind the wheel?

Stan Van Meter, President of Txtblocker, said, “There’s 4,000 to 5,000 accidents every day on U.S. highways that are directly attributable to distractions. Sure, texting is a convenience, but that convenience is very dangerous.”

So he created Txtblocker. When the cell phone is in a moving vehicle, the service uses GPS and the cell phone’s signal to lock up the phone’s buttons so you can’t use it. Although you could still dial 911 and other emergency numbers.You could also use a special map to program “No Cell Zones” like around schools and block access to texting or web surfing at certain times.

Van Meter said, “Technology got us into this situation, and Txtblocker is a technology solution that helps stop it.”

TrendBlog: Chinese designer Daizi Zheng recently created a concept mobile phone that runs off of Coca-Cola. The Chinese ex-pat, who new resides in London, designed the phone as a proof of concept for Nokia. It uses the soda’s sugar to create a “bio battery” that powers the phone for potentially three to four times longer than a traditional lithium battery. Safe disposal is easy, as the only waste products are water and oxygen.

While the overall environmental benefit of using Coca-Cola to power mobile phones is debatable, this project shows that unusual sources can inspire new design and technology. It also demonstrates that there is interest in alternate forms of energy and concern about the effects of pollution.
