Is Bubbly the New Twitter?
Category: Business>Cool Business Ideas
AdvertisingAge: A hot new social-networking service dubbed Bubbly, which is essentially a voice-based Twitter, is quickly gaining popularity among Indians. And thanks to Bollywood celebs being early adopters, Bubbly is growing virally and with virtually zero marketing spend.
Bubbly is the brainchild of 5-year-old mobile and social app firm Bubble Motion, which is based in Silicon Valley and Singapore. Its first product was BubbleTalk, a person-to-person voice-messaging service that, instead of SMS, sends mobile audio messages and has about 100 million users now.

Healthy Seaweed Chips
Category: Business>Cool Business Ideas
TrendCentral: These seaweed chips from Maine Coast Sea Vegetables have become a popular mid-afternoon snack in our office. Although it does involve another pricey trip to Whole Foods, we think these chips may be worth fighting the lines and extending our budgets for. Unlike most savory snack foods, they have no added salt, yet still have a distinct sodium flavor thanks to the sea veggies’ natural mineral salts. They’re no substitute for a hijiki salad, but at least the guilt factor is far lower than that experienced after polishing off an entire canister of Pringles.

Crafting The New
Category: Business>Cool Business Ideas

Cool Hunting: Designer Jonathan Nesci—whose Library Bookcase won recognition last year for his use of metal from Wallpaper Magazine—is back with a solo show entitled “The New” at a recently-developed design gallery in his hometown of Chicago.
Nesci explains that he designs his minimalist furniture to encapsulate mid-century aesthetics, and the matte white finish helps it to blend into its surroundings while adding a tasteful understatement. Drawing on everyday forms (a curb, a streetlight) the 31-year-old designer crafts his work using concrete and metal—industrial materials are as banal as his sources of inspiration.

Txtblocker
Category: Business>Cool Business Ideas
WFSB Hartford: For many parents, the thought of their teens driving off with a brand new license seems scary enough, but add cell phones and texting into the mix, and it can be downright terrifying.
So how much is too much, especially behind the wheel?
Stan Van Meter, President of Txtblocker, said, “There’s 4,000 to 5,000 accidents every day on U.S. highways that are directly attributable to distractions. Sure, texting is a convenience, but that convenience is very dangerous.”
So he created Txtblocker. When the cell phone is in a moving vehicle, the service uses GPS and the cell phone’s signal to lock up the phone’s buttons so you can’t use it. Although you could still dial 911 and other emergency numbers. You could also use a special map to program “No Cell Zones” like around schools and block access to texting or web surfing at certain times.
Van Meter said, “Technology got us into this situation, and Txtblocker is a technology solution that helps stop it.”

Pay with Kwedit
Category: Business>Cool Business Ideas

Iconoculture: Teens love to buy virtual goods from videogames, but if they don’t have access to Mom’s plastic, they’re often out of luck. That could change dramatically, now that Kwedit has launched. It’s a sophisticated honor system that allows anyone over age 13 to buy virtual goods with a promise to pay later. How will they pay later? By taking cash to any IRL Kwedit partner, such as 7-Eleven.
And if they don’t cough up the dough? It’ll reflect poorly on their Kwedit Score, which is similar to other commonly used credit scores, but dedicated to the Kwedit payment system. Lower Kwedit scores due to a poor payment history will make less Kwedit available.

The Coke Phone
Category: Business>Cool Business Ideas

TrendBlog: Chinese designer Daizi Zheng recently created a concept mobile phone that runs off of Coca-Cola. The Chinese ex-pat, who new resides in London, designed the phone as a proof of concept for Nokia. It uses the soda’s sugar to create a “bio battery” that powers the phone for potentially three to four times longer than a traditional lithium battery. Safe disposal is easy, as the only waste products are water and oxygen.
While the overall environmental benefit of using Coca-Cola to power mobile phones is debatable, this project shows that unusual sources can inspire new design and technology. It also demonstrates that there is interest in alternate forms of energy and concern about the effects of pollution.

Barter for Classes
Category: Business>Cool Business Ideas

Iconoculture: OurGoods, a New York community bartering network, has established a night school that offers adult continuing education to students in exchange for barter items the teacher might want.
One example: A writing instructor would like more locally grown organic produce. Students wishing to take her class can sign up to bring a nice basket of in-season vegetables. Grand Opening Public Projects is a pop-up storefront in Manhattan’s Lower East Side that’s hosting Trade School classes from January to March 2010.
